Infant, teen wounded by three gunmen in Kensington

First came the familiar sound of gunfire. Then, said residents of the 2100 block of Orleans Street, they opened their doors Monday afternoon to see a young mother running down the street, carrying her bleeding infant.

About 4 p.m., police said, a 17-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy were wounded when three gunmen opened fire on this small Kensington street, between Martha and Amber Streets, before fleeing in a green minivan.

The teen was shot once in the left temple and was in extremely critical condition at Temple University Hospital. The baby, who neighbors said was the teen's nephew, was shot once in each shoulder and was in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, police said.

Neighbors and a relative identified the teen victim as John Dougherty, a Kensington High School student.

When the shooting occurred, the teenager was standing with his brother-in-law, who was changing a tire on his car parked in a vacant lot next to the family home, said a relative who did not want to be identified. The teenager's sister and her infant were nearby, too, the relative said, when the gunmen approached from the back of the lot and opened fire.

Police found the bleeding teenager between two cars. Relatives had taken the infant to the hospital.

A witness said the gunmen were shooting at men in a white van across the street from the lot.

Police would not say if the teen or his brother-in-law had been targeted, but they believed the gunmen fled in a green Honda Odyssey.

Neighbors say the area has been plagued by gunfire in recent months.
