Equine students gain experience and make money at horse sale

DOYLESTOWN Equine science and management students at Delaware Valley College attended the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg last month and made $60,000 for the school's breeding center development fund.

More than 40 Del Val students took part in the sale, including 14 who are taking the Yearling Horse Sale Management course, and the sale of eight yearlings - 1-year-old horses - will help the school obtain higher-quality stallions for breeding and pay for improvements to the facilities.

"For our equine students, especially those specializing in breeding, this type of opportunity really helps prepare them for the industry," said Sarah Young, a Del Val equine science and management faculty member. "They gain priceless experience handling young horses while expanding their network of professionals in the equine industry."

The annual sale brings together horse trainers, farm owners, breeders and others interested in horse racing.
