Vets get holiday gifts

COATESVILLE The Transportation Management Association of Chester County, Elverson Borough residents, and elected officials dropped off hundreds of holiday gifts for patients at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Monday.

Veterans at the center use the Coatesville LINK bus service, which runs between Parkesburg and Coatesville, to get to jobs and other commitments in the community.

Holiday gifts for veterans included clothes, shoes, food and books. Twenty microwaves will go to patients who will move out of the medical center and into their own homes.

The county transportation agency and residents in the Ascot Summerfield Homeowners' Association have been collecting gifts since October. Betty Shaw, the transportation agency's executive assistant, helped develop the idea of a gift drive and said she was pleasantly surprised by the number of donations.

"We're so thankful to be a part of a community who really cares about our veterans," she said in a statement.

State Rep. Becky Corbin (R., Chester), U.S. Rep.-elect Ryan Costello (R., Pa), and his replacement on the county Board of Commissioners, Michelle Kichline, also delivered the gifts.
