Gay-marriage ruling fuels petition drive

Opponents and supporters of a federal judge's ruling overturning Utah's same-sex marriage ban have launched online petition drives.

More than 17,000 have signed a petition urging Gov. Gary Herbert, who has criticized the ruling, to let it stand.

The Sutherland Institute, a Utah think tank, has created

a petition against the ruling.

Acting Attorney General Brian Tarbet said his office would take the stay motion to the judge early Monday. If the judge doesn't immediately rule, state officials would ask the appeals court, which declined to act Sunday, to act. - AP

Man gives up; kids OK

A military veteran holed up inside a Kentucky home for more than 19 hours has given up, police said. Covington police said Michael Vaughan gave up after being shot in the arm. After a long negotiation, he freed his children, ages 15, 11, and 6, early Sunday. - AP

Safety glasses?

A Seattle teen's glasses may have saved her in a drive-by shooting. Police said a 16-year-old was on a couch in her home when gunfire erupted Saturday. Authorities say a bullet hit the bridge of the girl's glasses and apparently deflected away. The glasses broke, but the girl wasn't seriously injured. - AP
