Explosion injures 4 soldiers

A bomb exploded outside a military intelligence building northeast of Cairo Sunday, wounding four soldiers and damaging the structure.

The explosion in Anshas, Sharqiya province, came as violent student protests at a Cairo university and its branches played on television channels across the country, adding to the turmoil and public worry following a July 3 popularly backed military coup that toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. The interim government, wanting to cement its legitimacy, hopes for a strong voter turnout for a constitutional referendum Jan. 14-15. The interim president said Sunday that a presidential election can precede a parliamentary poll without violating a military-backed road map following the coup, the first official signal the transition plan may be amended. - AP
