A SOUTH JERSEY woman is in custody on charges she tried to kill her three children by driving her car into the Delaware River.

Burlington County prosecutor Robert Bernardi said Joann Smith, of Florence Township, was driving in the town about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when she drove onto a boat ramp and into the water. A bystander helped Smith and the three children, ages 15, 14 and 13, escape from the partially submerged vehicle. One child suffered cuts.

Smith has been charged with three counts each of attempted murder and child endangerment.

Her bail was set at $600,000, and she was expected to make an initial court appearance this afternoon.
