No holiday beach replenishment at Surf City

Beach replenishment will not mar the Memorial Day holiday weekend in Surf City on Long Beach Island.

Shoreline work at the Ocean County town will begin after June 3 and will be completed by June 28, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

During the operation to replace sand lost from a $6 million project completed four years ago, officials may close beaches in two-block stretches for a few days at a time. Local authorities had feared the work would continue through the summer season.

Beaches were closed during an initial beach replenishment project completed in 2007 because World War I-era munitions dumped at sea were pumped ashore with the sand. - AP
