Homeless man dies after being hit, dragged by SUV

The driver of a sport-utility vehicle struck a man in Lindenwold yesterday morning and dragged him nearly a mile to Stratford before realizing that the fatal accident had occurred, authorities said. Edward Calengelo Jr., 65, who officials said was homeless, was pinned under a black Ford Edge about 6:45 a.m. as it pulled out of the Chadwick Village Apartments on the 1600 block of Laurel Road, said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. The car continued - with Calengelo trapped underneath - to Laurel and Warwick Roads, where the motorist pulled over. "He noticed the car was not running right, looked underneath, and saw someone there," Laughlin said. The driver was not identified, and Lindenwold police were not expected to press charges. "It appears to have been an unfortunate accident," Laughlin said. - Edward Colimore
