Death of man by trolley believed a suicide

A 57-year-old man was killed by a trolley on Christmas night in Upper Darby in what police believe was a suicide.

Dennis D'Agostino, whose last known address was in Drexel Hill, was hit by an outbound Route 101 SEPTA trolley behind the Drexeline Shopping Center about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said yesterday.

D'Agostino was wearing dark clothes and standing near the tracks, SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax said. When the trolley driver saw D'Agostino, she rang a warning signal, but he didn't move, Chitwood said. The driver didn't have enough time to stop the trolley.

Police were searching for D'Agostino's relatives yesterday, and Chitwood said the man might have been homeless.
