The University of Pennsylvania raised $30,000 for local charities by selling off furniture, appliances, and other items left behind by students who moved out this spring, officials said Thursday.

The United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania will distribute the money, officials said.

About 3,500 people sorted through the 85,000 pounds of material during the sale last weekend at Penn's ice rink.

"We pretty much sold out," Penn spokeswoman Barbara Lea-Kruger said. - Susan Snyder
