Driver waives hearing in text-messaging case

The Chester County driver accused of rushing to make a drug delivery while text-messaging, causing a crash that killed her friend and the friend's unborn child, waived her preliminary hearing yesterday.

Police said Meghan L. Obendorfer, 18, of Downingtown, was exceeding the speed limit on rain-slick roads in East Brandywine Township about 4:30 p.m. on April 14 when she failed to negotiate a curve and slid into the path of an oncoming school bus. Her passenger, Nicolette Pomon, 17, of Downingtown, who was nine months pregnant, was killed, and the driver of the school bus was treated for minor injuries.

Obendorfer, who faces charges that include homicide by vehicle and reckless driving, remained free on unsecured bail of $25,000. - Kathleen Brady Shea
