Philadelphia now counts about 93,000 more people as residents than it used to, thanks to a change in the U.S. Census Bureau's estimate of the city's 2008 population.

Last year, the city successfully challenged the bureau's numbers. The city's population is now reported as 1,540,351 - 1.5 percent over the 2000 population.

"A successful challenge to the 2008 U.S. census estimate of Philadelphia's population confirms what I knew all along," Mayor Nutter said. "Philadelphia is a growing and vibrant city." - Marcia Gelbart
