Lawrence Paul Cowan, 54, of Boothwyn, who prosecutors said obtained a state license to sell insurance using his deceased father's Social Security number and then failed to pay federal income taxes, was sentenced yesterday in federal court to four years in prison for fraud.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Cowan made hundreds of thousands of dollars working as an insurance agent from 1998 through 2004 under his father's Social Security number, but filed no federal tax returns. Between 2002 and 2004, he evaded more than $73,000 in federal income tax, prosecutors said. Cowan also was ordered to pay $308,000 in restitution, back taxes and interest to the IRS, and fined $5,000. - Inquirer staff
