A Bensalem mother of six was charged Friday with neglecting and abusing her 3-year-old daughter, police said.

Andrea Amaya, 24, of Knights Road, was being held at the Bucks County prison after failing to post $200,000 bail, police said. She became the focus of an investigation Nov. 3, when her daughter was hospitalized at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children with a third-degree burn to her right hand and bruising throughout her body, police said.

A further examination determined that the child was "severely abused, neglected, and malnourished," Bensalem police said in a statement. The girl is now "thriving" with a foster family after treatment of her injuries, including skin grafts for her burned hand, police said. Police said Amaya's five other children also had been placed in foster care.

Amaya was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and simple assault, police said. - Staff report
