It was unclear Friday how much money the Philadelphia School District will receive in federal Race to the Top funds, but there is no doubt the cash-strapped district that laid off an additional 141 workers this month could use the money.

Pennsylvania received $41.3 million, half of which will be doled out to school districts across the state, said Tim Eller, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The money is intended to support changes to the educational system advocated by the Obama administration and to bolster science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. - Susan Snyder
