A 21-year-old man was shot during an attempted robbery in the Summerdale section of the city early Saturday, police said, after a family member drew a gun to defend him, setting off a brief exchange of shots.

Just after midnight, officers arrived at the 5600 block of Summerdale Avenue, where three men wearing hoodies and masks and carrying black handguns came up to the man and two cousins.

One man ordered the 21-year-old victim to the ground. The victim's 24-year-old cousin pulled out a gun to defend his family members, he told police; when the would-be robber saw this, he fired a shot. The victim's cousin returned fire, and the three masked men ran off.

The 21-year-old was shot once in his right calf. Another cousin, 17, told police his cellphone was stolen during the exchange. - Jonathan Lai
