NEW YORK - Sen. Charles Schumer's office says he made an inappropriate comment about a flight attendant who demanded he turn off his cell phone.

Spokesman Max Young would not specify the remark yesterday. He says Schumer made an off-the-cuff comment under his breath after the flight attendant walked away.

Young says the senator regrets the comment and apologized in a phone call to the flight attendant. Young would not say what the expletive was.

The news Web site Politico said the attendant told Schumer to turn off his phone before takeoff. It said Schumer complied but made the remark when she walked away.
