SEPTA: Car removed from train tracks in Montgomery County, service resumes

An unoccupied car was removed from SEPTA train tracks between the Glenside and Jenkintown stations in Montgomery County Tuesday morning, about three hours after it was struck by a train carrying about 500 passengers and crew, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The drama began shortly after 7 a.m. when an unidentified senior citizen drove his car onto the tracks near Rices Mill Road in Glenside and became confused, SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern said. Witnesses were able to pull him from the car before the train hit it, she said.

The Warminster Regional Rail Line train was heading to Center City, Redfern said. Most passengers were able to walk to the Jenkintown station to continue their commute, she said. Four passengers with disabilities who needed assistance were brought to a SEPTA van to take them to their destinations.

Service on SEPTA's Warminster, Glenside Combined, and Lansdale/Doylestown lines, initially suspended, resumed about 10 a.m. after the car was removed. All Regional Rail lines were experiencing delays.
