Dolores H. Baxter | School employee, 78

Dolores Hill Baxter, 78, of West Mount Airy, a former school district employee, died of pancreatic cancer Sunday at her home.

Dolores Hill Baxter, 78, of West Mount Airy, a former school district employee, died of pancreatic cancer Sunday at her home.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Baxter graduated from William Penn High School before becoming a licensed practical nurse.

From 1958 to 1962, she worked as a clerk in the Marriage License Bureau at City Hall, said her husband of 58 years, Augustus Baxter Sr.

After her children were grown, he said, Mrs. Baxter returned to work as a library aide and teacher's assistant at Kelly and Lewis Schools, both in Germantown, Lingelbach School in West Mount Airy, and Widener Memorial School in Olney.

Her husband, a member of the Philadelphia school board from 1971 through 1983, said she was with the Philadelphia School District from 1971 to 1984.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Baxter is survived by sons Augustus Jr., Donald and Jonathan; daughters Deedra Rice, Stacey Francis, and Lisa; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother; and 29 nieces and nephews.

A viewing is set for 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Paul's Baptist Church, 10th and Wallace Streets, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service there. Burial is to be in Ivy Hill Cemetery.
