James M. Schurz, 76, the former publisher of the Herald-Mail newspaper in Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday of cancer, the newspaper reported.
James M. Schurz, 76, the former publisher of the Herald-Mail newspaper in Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday of cancer, the newspaper reported.
Mr. Schurz was senior vice president of South Bend, Ind.-based Schurz Communications Inc., which bought the Herald-Mail in 1960.
He worked for the San Francisco Examiner before moving to Hagerstown in 1968. He spent nearly 20 years at the Herald-Mail, including 12 as editor and 11 as editor and publisher.
Mr. Schurz served as a staff assistant and speechwriter to President Richard M. Nixon in 1972.
