Dorothy Dean | Dietitian, 98

Dorothy Mittelstadt Dean, 98, of Penn Valley, a dietitian and a Phillies fan, died Thursday at home.

Dorothy Mittelstadt Dean, 98, of Penn Valley, a dietitian and a Phillies fan, died Thursday at home.

A native of Laurel, Neb., Mrs. Dean graduated from what is now Iowa State University. She was a dietitian for several Midwestern hospitals before moving East in the 1930s to be a dietitian at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. There she met Lewis K. Dean, who would later be chief surgeon at the hospital. They married in 1940.

After their two sons were born, Mrs. Dean was a homemaker and active with the Penn Valley Women's Club. She was a member of the American Dietetic Association.

She loved to read, her son Thomas said, and followed the Phillies on television for years. When her sight began to fail, she switched to radio and listened to every game except when the team played late on the West Coast, her son said. The Phillies' championship 2008 season was a big thrill for her, he said.

In addition, Mrs. Dean is survived by another son, William; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1962.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens.
