THANK YOU for your column suggesting that donations to charity are way more in line with the true spirit of the holidays.

I direct the Utility Emergency Services Fund, which provides assistance to low-income families to get utility service or keep theirs on.

We see firsthand that a gift that results in a family's waking up on Christmas (or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Ramadan) morning to a warm house is much more meaningful than a gift of a tired tie to one's father-in-law. Thanks for helping to get our priorities right.
