Letters: Helmets off to coach Joe Paterno

IAM NOT A FAN of the violent game of football. Nevertheless, I believe that Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno is deserving of accolades and widespread public admiration as he inks a three-year contract extension on the eve of his 82nd birthday. I appreciate that "JoePa" is known as a coach who has done what is within his power to ensure that his players do not bring dishonor to his university.

Coach Paterno certainly does not need the money he garners from his continued service to his beloved employer. He could spend his time lounging on a Florida beach as many in his socioeconomic class have elected to do years before reaching his advanced age. The fact that he has chosen to continue doing what he loves should serve as a sterling example for others. At the rate he is going, I expect Joe Paterno to be honored on the field as he coaches at the age of 100! Why not?
