Cutting Temple sports shortsighted

As an alumnus of Temple University, I am appalled at the decision to stop seven sports teams for financial reasons.

AS AN alumnus of Temple University, I am appalled at the decision to stop seven sports teams for financial reasons.

The goal of Temple University should be to broaden all sports teams, not to curtail. Sports teams enhance the image of the university when they participate at home and especially away.

Financial ? The approved budget on June 20, 2013, of Temple for 2013-14 is $1.2 billion and the athletic budget is $44 million and the proposed saving is $3 to $3.5 million.

Why not cut expenses throughout the university? We all know that large institutions have waste throughout: a quarter of 1 percent cut in every other department will more than cover the $3.5 million yearly proposed savings.

Perhaps it is time for the board of trustees and president of Temple University to resign as it is obvious that they have misguided priorities.

Sports are essential for a top-rated university.
