On Saturday, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and Ku Klux Klan members gathered in Charlottesville, Va., to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park. Clashes erupted with counterprotesters. Heather D. Heyer, 32, was killed and 19 other people were injured when a motorist described as a white supremacist allegedly drove into the crowd.

In times of crisis, both big and small, it's only normal to wonder: What can I do to help? But it can be hard to know what actions are worthwhile and what is just adding noise to an already crowded echo chamber.
