Heisman pick: It's McCoy of Texas

The 2009 regular season is nearly over, just one game remains - today's Army-Navy clash at Lincoln Financial Field - and it's time to wrap things up with tonight's presentation of the Heisman Trophy.

Yeah, we know there are a bunch of bowl contests and a BCS championship game remaining, but we tend to consider the BCS the way Penn State coach Joe Paterno did yesterday.

"I think it's for the birds," he said.

As for the Heisman, our ballot read:

1. Colt McCoy, Texas

2. Mark Ingram, Alabama

3. C.J. Spiller, Clemson.

After much consideration, we liked Spiller for third instead of Tim Tebow because of his all-around season, which was similar to what Brian Westbrook used to do at Villanova. He will make a great pro. Plus, Tebow was going to get enough votes to make it to New York and still may win the prize.

It's difficult to predict tonight's winner. There is no front-runner. McCoy, Ingram and Tebow are the favorites because they received more television time than the other two candidates.

Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh was college football's best defensive lineman all season. Stanford's Toby Gerhart led the nation in touchdowns (26) and placed second in rushing (144.7 yards per game). But their teams didn't win as often as those of the other three.

Figure McCoy, last year's runner-up, to get the nod over Tebow and Ingram. He is the winningest quarterback in college football, and he helped lead the Longhorns into the BCS national championship game without a strong running game.
