College Basketball: Florida extends Donovan's deal

Florida coach Billy Donovan has signed a three-year contract extension that should keep him in Gainesville through the 2015-16 season. Donovan agreed to the extension in October, adding to the six-year deal he signed in 2007 that pays him $3.5 million annually.

Donovan has led the Gators to two national titles, three Final Four appearances, and 11 NCAA tournament berths in 15 seasons. His career record is 402-169, including 367-149 at Florida.

Birch ditching Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh freshman center Khem Birch has left the program. Coach Jamie Dixon says Birch, who is from Montreal, opted to leave for personal reasons. The highly touted Birch averaged 4.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 10 games this season for the 15th-ranked Panthers (9-1). He had 15 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Penn on Nov. 25.

The Arcadia men's team defeated Rosemont, 70-58, in Glenside. Travis Saltus led the Knights (6-4) with 19 points. With the nonconference loss, the Ravens dropped to 5-4. The high scorer for Rosemont was senior Harrison Carsillo (Collingswood) with 15 points. . . . In the earlier women's game, there were eight tie scores and 10 lead changes before the Ravens (5-4) defeated the 1-6 Knights, 67-59. Ashley Montecchio led the Ravens with a career-high 32 points. 

Garland planning transfer

Philadelphia native Tyrone Garland announced on his Twitter account that he plans to transfer from Virginia Tech at the end of the semester.

A source told the Washington Post that Garland had already returned home to Philadelphia. At Bartram High, Garland led the Public League in scoring as both a junior and senior. The sophomore guard appeared in eight games this season for the Hokies.

La Salle lets Lopez go

La Salle announced that redshirt freshman Matt Lopez has been given his release to transfer. The 7-foot center averaged 5.9 minutes per game for the Explorers.
