Flyers, Brayden Schenn agree on multi-year contract extension

The Flyers and center Brayden Schenn agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension, general manager Ron Hextall announced.

HOURS AFTER trading Scott Hartnell to Columbus yesterday for R.J. Umberger, the Flyers announced they agreed to terms on a 2-year contract extension with Brayden Schenn.

The team, per its policy, did not disclose financial terms of the deal, but according to Bob McKenzie of TSN, the extension is worth an average of $2.5 million per year.

Earlier in the offseason, general manager Ron Hextall said he regarded re-signing Schenn as a top priority. The 22-year-old center was set to become a restricted free agent when free agency begins on July 1.

"I'm happy with the deal I got," Schenn said yesterday evening on a conference call with reporters. "Two years to keep on proving myself and showing that I can be a productive player for the Flyers."

Schenn, who this past season completed his entry-level NHL contract, is coming off the best of his three campaigns with the Flyers. Playing in all 82 regular-season games, he scored 20 goals and recorded 21 assists while logging 15:45 minutes of ice time per game.

Negotiations for the contract started last week, Hextall said. The GM added that both parties right away agreed 2 years was the right length for the deal.

Hextall was complimentary of Schenn's performance last season but added the young player is "capable of taking his game to another level." Asked if the Flyers would like to see more consistency from Schenn, Hextall did not dispel that notion.

"I think Brayden had a good year last year," Hextall said. "He's a good young player. Can he be more consistent? You could probably say that about every player on our team, but yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. I certainly wasn't disappointed in Brayden's performance but the consistency is something that most players over an 82-game season can get better at."

Schenn came to the Flyers 3 years ago yesterday in the Mike Richards trade with the Kings that also brought Wayne Simmonds to Philadelphia. Schenn, who turns 23 in August, has increased his point totals and ice time each season in Philadelphia.

The Flyers surely hope that trend continues. If so, a bigger payday for Schenn could come two summers from now.
