Merion Mercy's Danielle Carrozza was named the 2008 Gatorade Pennsylvania volleyball player of the year.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement, academic excellence, and character demonstrated on and off the court. Carrozza is also a candidate for the national player of the year award, which is to be announced soon.
The 5-foot-9 outside hitter led the Golden Bears to a 48-0 record and their second consecutive state championship this season. She was the most valuable player of the state tournament for the last two seasons and is a four-time PIAA all-state selection.
Carrozza maintains a B average in the classroom, raises money for cancer research, and volunteers as a reading instructor for children.
