Southeastern Pa. lacrosse notes

The Haverford School has tied a record by having five senior members of its lacrosse team named all-Americans who will play in the sixth annual Under Armour Lacrosse Classic, scheduled for July 2 at Towson University in Maryland.

The Fords, who finished the season 23-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN, will send three midfielders, a defender, and a goalie to play for the South team at the Classic.

Matt Walters, Carl Walrath, and Brendan McGrath are the midfielders. The goalie is Conor Kelly, and the defenseman is Goran Murray. Walrath scored two goals in the last 36 seconds to give Haverford the Inter-Academic Invitational championship this season.

Joining the five Haverford School players on the South squad will be defender Brian Dailey of Conestoga, attacker Kevin Forster of La Salle, attacker Joe Sankey of Penn Charter, and defender Ryan Kilpatrick, a resident of West Chester who played for Salesianum.

Two Downingtown East players, midfielder Kelly Devlin and goalie Allie Murray, head a list of five area players selected to the girls' South team at the Classic. Also chosen were Episcopal Academy midfielder Taylor Trimble, Baldwin midfielder Sloan Warren, and Radnor goalie Annie Woehling.

All the area players are committed to play for Division I schools next season.

The boys' showcase game at the Classic will be televised live at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Missing in action. When Pennsbury couldn't hold a 4-0 lead and lost to St. Joseph's Prep, 10-7, in the opening round of the PIAA boys' playoffs last Wednesday, the Falcons were playing without four starters.

Missing because of injuries were junior midfielders Evan Caterson, Ryan McDonald and Sean Heilferty, and freshman defender Greg Kolowajtis.

"I was pleasantly surprised when we got up 4-0," Falcons coach Jamie Huber said. "Unfortunately, we have a thin bench and it showed. Our starters played very hard."

The Falcons will lose seven players to graduation - including five starters - but will have the four injured starters back along with junior goalie Drew Sweetland. Sweetland stopped 15 shots against the Hawks. Pennsbury finished 15-10.

Contenders again? Archbishop Carroll, which won its 11th straight Catholic League girls' championship this season, will lose eight seniors, including four starters, but don't feel too sorry for coach Lorraine Beers.

Among those leaving are leading scorer Hannah Schmitt and groundball leader Alyssa DiBona. Eight starters will return, however.

"I expect us to contend again next year," Beers said.

Beers watched Carroll fall as the District 12 representative in the second round of the PIAA playoffs for the second straight year.

This year Garnet Valley, the second-place team from District 1, beat Carroll, 15-8.

"The way the playoffs are structured, the District 12 winner will always meet the No. 2 team from District 1 in the second round," Carroll pointed out. "That makes this a difficult bracket. That's not sour grapes. That's what it is, and I don't expect it to change."

This year, Carroll beat Boyertown, the sixth seed from District 1, in the opening round before bowing to the Jaguars. Two years ago, Springfield (Delco) beat the Patriots in the second round. Last season, it was eventual state champion Radnor that knocked out the Patriots in the second round.
