Since he's preparing to play point guard at Towson, Neumann-Goretti's Zane Martin worked hard over the summer on his ballhandling skills while playing for Team Final in AAU events.

Martin, a 6-foot-3 senior wing, displayed strong all-around talents while helping the Saints easily turn back Roman Catholic, 85-68, in a Catholic League showdown Tuesday night before a standing-room-only crowd at 11th and Moore Streets.

The southpaw produced 19 points, including a pair of three-pointers, seven rebounds, and five assists as N-G gained payback for a pair of losses to the Cahillites last season.

"We just played harder than them," Martin said. "That's what it was. We came out and played our best basketball."

Down by 12-2 in the early going, N-G, which fell to Roman in last year's league final, used an 11-0 run at the start of the second quarter to go ahead, 31-20. It was highlighted by Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree's steal and breakaway dunk and Martin's trey.

"Everybody was a little nervous at the beginning, but we started to pick up the pace," Martin said.

Cosby-Roundtree, a 6-foot-8 junior, recorded 22 points and 12 boards. His alley-oop slam, off a feed from Martin, put the Saints (7-2 overall, 3-0 league) comfortably in front, 66-52, with just under 7 minutes to go.

Junior guard Quade Green (20) and senior guard Rasheed Browne (15) were also double-digit scorers. Senior point guard Vaughn Covington chipped in nine points, with three treys and six assists.

"That's the way our offense is set up, for everybody to get their touches," said Martin, who plans to major in communications in college.

Lamar Stevens, a 6-7 senior wing, led the Cahillites (9-2, 1-1) with 26 points and six boards. Fellow Penn State recruit Tony Carr, a 6-4 senior floor general, notched 18 points, eight assists, and eight boards.

"Listen, we did what we were supposed to do," N-G coach Carl Arrigale said. "We're on our home court. You're supposed to win. That's what this league is all about."
