Monroe resigns Brandywine High coaching job

RANDY MONROE'S one-season experiment as a high school basketball coach is over.

Monroe, a former All-City selection at Roman Catholic High and later head coach at Maryland-Baltimore County, has resigned as Brandywine High's boys coach. In his one season as the Delaware school's coach, the rebuilding Bulldogs were 1-18.

Monroe, 51, is considering college offers as an assistant coach.

"Randy was the right guy at the right time,'' Brandywine athletic director Rick Shea said. "When you hire a college coach there's always a chance he'll go back to college. It's a risk you take.

"Our students are better people and better basketball players [after one season with Monroe].''

Despite Brandywine's losing record, Monroe is glad he took the job.

"I appreciate the opportunity Rick Shea and the people at Brandywine gave me to teach and touch the lives of young people,'' Monroe said. "We had a group that hadn't played organized basketball before and had no varsity experience. No matter how bad our record was, we continued to teach fundamentals. I think [the team] learned how to persevere.''

Brandywine's only victory was over McKean High, which won four games.

Shea is accepting applications for Brandywine's coaching vacancy.
