Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A
The IronPigs doubled up the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 4-2, at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.
All four of Lehigh Valley's runs were scored in the top of the first inning on five hits and a walk.
Shortstop Reid Brignac, designated hitter Steve Susdorf and right fielder Leandro Castro all recorded RBI singles, while catcher Sebastian Valle capped the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Right-handed starter David Buchanan (2-0, 2.74 ERA) took the win. He surrendered two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four over six innings.
The IronPigs took three of four from the RailRiders to improve to 8-10 on the season. Lehigh Valley returns home for an eight-game home stand beginning Tuesday. Southpaw Greg Smith (1-0, 2.31 ERA) is scheduled to start the opening game of a four-game series with the Norfolk Tides.
Reading Fightin Phils – Double A
The Fightin Phils started slow, but recovered to beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 7-3, at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa.
Right-handed starter Luis Paulino (2-0, 1.80 ERA) allowed a run in each of the first two innings to put the Fightin Phils in an early 2-0 hole. Paulino was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings. It was good enough to take the win as the offense came alive in the middle innings.
In the third, second baseman Albert Cartwright reached on a leadoff single and scored on shortstop Cesar Hernandez's RBI groundout to cut the lead in half.
Reading seized the lead in the fourth on catcher Tommy Joseph's two-run home run, which came two batters after right fielder Kelly Dugan's leadoff single. It was Joseph's second blast of the season.
The Fightin Phils tacked on two more runs in the fifth. With two outs, first baseman Cam Perkins hit an RBI double to score third baseman Carlos Alonso, who drew a walk. Dugan followed with an RBI single for a 5-2 lead.
Perkins would add insurance runs in the seventh with a two-run blast, his second of the season.
Righty Ken Giles struck out two in two innings to close out the win.
Perkins (2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBI), Dugan (2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI) and Cartwright (2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and a strikeout) had multi-hit games.
The Fightin Phils (10-5) are the first team in the farm system to reach double-digit wins. The series continues Tuesday as righty Perci Garner (2-0, 3.00 ERA) is slated to make the start for Reading.
Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced
The Threshers were outlasted by the Daytona Cubs, 6-5, in 11 innings at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The Threshers extended their losing streak to three games.
The bats were hot early as both teams scored five runs in the first four innings.
All the Threshers' runs came via the long ball. Third baseman Harold Martinez hit a two-run home run in the first, center fielder Peter Lavin delivered a two-run blast of his own in the third and shortstop Angelo Mora added a solo shot in the fourth.
Right-handed starter Jon Prosinski was tagged for five runs on seven hits and two walks over hit four innings of work. He struck out two.
The game would stay that way until the 11th when righty Colton Murray uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded to allow the winning run to score.
The Threshers (3-14) moved to the basement of the Florida State League Northern Division with the loss. Clearwater will turn to righty Miguel Nunez (1-1, 3.00 ERA) when teams play another Tuesday.
Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A
The BlueClaws extended a losing streak to four games with a 4-1 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood Township, N.J.
Right-handed starter Mark Leiter gave the BlueClaws a quality start, but he settled for a no-decision. Leiter allowed one run four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings to lower his ERA to 2.63. In the fourth, Leiter allowed a one-out triple and threw a wild pitch with two outs to allow the run to score.
Lakewood would even the score in the seventh. Second baseman Andrew Pullin singled to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out double by catcher Gabriel Lino.
Righty Ulises Joaquin suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on two hits, including a home run, two walks in the ninth. Joaquin also committed a throwing error and a passed ball by Lino to aid the RiverDogs.
Lakewood only managed seven hits in the loss, but first baseman Willians Astudillo was a bright spot. He finished 3-for-4 to raise his average to .476 (20-for-42).
The BlueClaws sunk to 4-12 on the season. Righty Viza (1-2, 3.71 ERA) will take the ball for Lakewood as the series continues Tuesday.
