New J-Roll suitor?

Could a mystery team be emerging as a possibility to land free-agent shortstop Jimmy Rollins?

Rollins' agent, Dan Lozano, has told the Phillies that he is talking to another team, according to ESPN.com. Other teams think it is the Detroit Tigers.

Lozano and the Phillies continue to talk about Rollins returning, but the sticking point seems to remain the length of the contract. Rollins is seeking a 5-year deal; the Phillies are thought to have offered 3 years.

It is unclear how aggressively the Tigers are pursuing Rollins.

Jhonny Peralta hit .299 with 21 home runs and 86 RBI in 146 games for the Tigers last season at shortstop.

A 9-year veteran, Peralta has appeared in more than 200 games at third base. Wilson Betemit played 97 games at third last season for Detroit after being acquired in June but is a free agent. The Tigers have inquired about a number of potential third basemen, including Aramis Ramirez before he signed with Milwaukee.

When the St. Louis Cardinals signed Rafael Furcal to a 2-year, $14 million deal over the weekend, it seemed that potential Rollins suitors had dried up.

Milwaukee, which had expressed interest in Rollins, reportedly offered a 4-year deal during the winter meetings.

Instead of waiting - Lozano also was negotating Albert Pujols' new deal - Milwaukee signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a 1-year deal with an option and Ramirez to a 3-year deal.

"They showed legitimate interest in playing for us," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told FoxSports.com. "We sat down and said we can have both of them instead of waiting on Jimmy."

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has been steadfast that re-signing Rollins remains his top priority.
