Rhys Hoskins hits 30th home run in losing effort

NEW YORK – Rhys Hoskins was not in much of a mood to celebrate his 30th home run of the season, but it was a pretty good accomplishment for the Phillies' second-year outfielder.

At 25 years and 176 days, he became the youngest Phillie to reach 30 home runs since Scott Rolen hit 31 at the age of 23 to lead the Phillies in 1998. Hoskins also became the first Phillies hitter to reach 30 home runs since Ryan Howard led the team with 33 in 2011, the last year the Phillies went to the postseason.

Domonic Brown's 27 home runs in 2013 had been the Phillies' highest total since then and a total of five players — Howard, Brown, Jimmy Rollins, Marlon Byrd and Maikel Franco — had led the team in home runs since then.

"Sure, it's a number," Hoskins said when asked about his 30th home run.

He hit a combined 47 home runs at triple-A Lehigh Valley and with the Phillies last season, so there's reason to believe a bigger number is in his future.

"I hope," Hoskins said. "I hope."

With the benefit of expanded rosters, the Phillies no longer need to use the disabled list. They do, however, still have an injury list and it's a growing one that now includes outfielders Roman Quinn and Nick Williams.

Quinn walked around the visiting clubhouse at Citi Field Sunday morning with a sneaker on his left foot and a shower shoe on his right. It was a clear indication that the Phillies will not have the services of the speedy outfielder in the immediate future.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler offered a medical report on Williams shortly before the start of Sunday's series finale with the New York Mets.

"Nick's shoulder has been bothering him (just enough to be annoying) for quite some time," the manager wrote in a text to reporters. "He's also dealing with a (also annoying) finger issue. We're managing both and wanted to give him a recovery day."

Veteran Joey Bautista got the start in right field Sunday, but Williams did pinch hit and struck out in the ninth inning.

"Obviously we'd love to have Quinn available, [but] that's not an option," Kapler said.

Quinn admitted that he needs more time to recover from the fracture of the fifth toe on his right foot that he suffered Wednesday in Miami.

"The thing is, it's on the outside part of my foot, so right now it's kind of hard to walk on," Quinn said. "I have really no support on my pinky toe. I think it's more, give it a couple days and see how it feels. Once the swelling goes down, I think I'll be good to go."

He added that he expects to return before the end of the season.

"Yeah, for sure," Quinn said. "That's definitely the expectation, to get out there whenever I can to help the team out."

Quinn, 25, knows far too much about the injury part of the game. Since the Phillies made him their second-round pick in 2011, he has never been able to play more than 92 games in a single season. He has played 61 games this season, including 33 with the Phillies, and he was batting .338 with 10 extra-base hits and an .894 OPS at the time of his latest injury.

Jacob deGrom, after being scratched Sunday, is scheduled to pitch for the Mets Monday. If he stays on turn from there, he would not pitch against the Phillies when the teams meet later this month (Sept. 17-19) at Citizens Bank Park. … Lost in the Phillies' defeat Saturday night was the return of pitcher Jerad Eickhoff, who made his first major-league appearance since Aug. 30 of last season. He pitched one inning in relief of Zach Eflin, allowing a run on three hits. He also struck out two batters. "It was huge," Eickhoff said. "Just the feeling of joy and excitement because I got to do something again that makes me happy and gives me the most joy." … The Phillies fell to 6-10 against the Mets this season and 28-32 against the NL East. … The Phils open a three-game series vs. Washington Monday night with Tanner Roark scheduled to face Jake Arrieta.
