LAS VEGAS – No one should be surprised that 76ers center Joel Embiid is a member of  the Team Africa squad that will compete against Team World in the NBA Africa Game. But no one should be surprised that he won't play in the Aug. 5 exhibition in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Cameroonian center had season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in March. He has been rehabilitating and getting back into game shape. Embiid is expected to be ready when the Sixers head to training camp in September.

The game is put on by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association and will take place after the 15th edition of  Basketball Without Borders Africa, a series of camps for youngsters featuring NBA players.

Team Africa is made up of African-born NBA players and second-generation African players. Team World is comprised of players from other parts of the world.

Team Africa's roster includes  Luol Deng (Los Angeles Lakers), Thabo Sefolosha (Atlanta Hawks),  Bismack Biyombo (Orlando Magic),  Clint Capela (Houston Rockets), Gorgui Dieng (Minnesota Timberwolves),  Serge Ibaka (Toronto Raptors),  Luc Mbah a Moute (Los Angeles Clippers; a former Sixer),  Salah Mejri (Dallas Mavericks), Emmanuel Mudiay (Denver Nuggets), Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers), and Dennis Schroder (Hawks).

On the World team are Philly's Kyle Lowry (Raptors), Dirk Nowitzki (Mavericks; Germany), Kemba Walker (Charlotte Hornets),  Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Suns; Brazil), Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics),  Wilson Chandler (Nuggets), DeMarcus Cousins (New Orleans Pelicans), Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons), Courtney Lee (New  York Knicks), Kristaps Porzingis (Knicks; Latvia), and C.J. McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers).

Korkmaz improves

Furkan Kormaz is still struggling to convert three-point attempts, making just 2 of 8 in Wednesday's 103-102 summer-league loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the Sixers swingman was way more aggressive attacking the basket on the way to 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting overall. Korkmaz, who is known a three-point specialist, made all six of his two-point attempts.  He also finished with three assists, one steal, one rebound, one block, and three turnovers.

"That's who he is," Sixers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce said of the 6-foot-7, 192-pounder. "He's not just a shooter. That size and athleticism will allow him to make plays at the rim. The more confident he becomes and the move comfortable he becomes, we will see more of his game other than the perimeter shots."

Korkmaz is shooting just 29.2 percent on three-pointers in the summer league.
