Shapiro says Fetterman should 'honor' will of Pa. voters and not switch to GOP

Politico reported that President Donald Trump and Republicans have quietly sought to have the senator from Pennsylvania abandon the Democratic Party.

Gov. Josh Shapiro, responding to a report that President Donald Trump wants John Fetterman to switch parties, said Tuesday that the U.S. senator should “honor” the will of Pennsylvanians who voted for him as a Democrat.

“I don’t know what Sen. Fetterman is going to do,” Shapiro told CNN host Jake Tapper. “I know that Pennsylvanians voted for a Democrat to represent them in the United States Senate, and so I think he needs to honor that and continue with his service to Pennsylvania and hopefully get back to what he was elected to do and reflect the will of the people.”

On Monday, Politico reported that Republicans have been quietly seeking to flip Fetterman to the GOP or have him become an independent to prevent the Democrats from possibly gaining control of the Senate after midterm elections later this year.

Fox News host Sean Hannity told Fetterman in March that Trump had instructed Hannity to let Fetterman know that he will have “our full support” and “more money than he ever dreamed of” if the senator abandoned the Democrats.

To the dismay of many Democrats, Fetterman has sided with Senate Republicans on key votes to move Trump’s agenda forward, including the war against Iran.

However, Fetterman told Politico that he was not changing parties. “I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one,” he said, adding that he would not make a good Republican.
