What you should know
  1. The 76ers beat Celtics, 113-97, in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series in Boston Tuesday night.

  2. Joel Embiid led all scorers with 33 points. Tyrese Maxey added 25, Quentin Grimes scored 18, and Paul George finished with 16.

  3. The Celtics now lead the series, 3-2, and Game 6 will be Thursday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in South Philly.

  4. VJ Edgecombe finished third in Rookie of the Year voting after averaging 16 points and nearly 6 rebounds per game.

Sixers rise from the dead to force Game 6

The 76ers have looked completely done twice in their best-of-seven-games series against the Boston Celtics. The first time was the very first moment they stepped on the court and were blown off it in Game 1. The next was Game 4, when the Sixers were completely outclassed even with Joel Embiid back from an April 9 appendectomy.

Each time they responded admirably. And each time they answered with a win. The Sixers were a revelation in Game 2 as rookie VJ Edgecombe created history. And in Game 5, Embiid repeated history, coming back from injury once again and breathing life into his team.

The big man posted 33 points, eight assists, and four rebounds, and keyed the Sixers’ latest improbable win, 113-97, to stave off elimination. He got help from Tyrese Maxey (25 points) and Paul George (16 points).

Sixers dominate fourth quarter to take Game 5 in Boston

The Sixers got 33 points from center Joel Embiid, 25 from Tyrese Maxey, and a career playoff-high 18 points from Quentin Grimes to beat the Celtics, 113-97, in Game 5 and extend their first-round series.

Sixers cut into Celtics lead, trail by one heading into fourth

The 76ers have the Boston Celtics on the ropes.

They've recovered from injuries to Joel Embiid, another off night for VJ Edgecombe and defensive struggles for Paul George, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Tyrese Maxey.

As they enter the fourth quarter trailing only 86-85, none of that matters. They have a chance to extend their season with a win in Game 5.

Embiid returns to game

Almost as quickly as he headed up the tunnel to the Sixers locker room, Joel Embiid returned to the team's bench, walked immediately to the scorer's table and checked back into the game.

Embiid heads to locker room with apparent injury

Joel Embiid has headed back to the locker room, after he was bent over in pain at the start of a timeout with about four minutes to play in the third quarter. He was receiving attention from Sixers' head athletic trainer Kevin Johnson, and briefly moved to the bench before going to the locker room.

Embiid underwent an appendectomy on April 9, and returned to action in Sunday's Game 4 loss. He had 25 points and six assists in 27 minutes before his departure.

Murphy: Embiid a liability on defense

Not a bad effort so far from the Sixers. Joel Embiid and Paul George got a little carried away early, combining for seven three-point attempts in the first six minutes of Game 5. But Embiid and George have both been assets on the offensive end, while Tyrese Maxey has been the best player (13 points on 5-for-10 shooting).

Defensively, it’s hard to see this going much different than Game 4. Embiid is simply a liability on the defensive end. He isn’t challenging anything at the rim, nor is he rotating fast enough to deter the Celtics from attacking the restricted area. That’s not to say that Andre Drummond has been any better. But you do wonder at times what things would look like with Adem Bona patrolling the paint.

In the meantime, a solid piece of pre-Process trivia for you ...

Defense letting Sixers down in first half of Game 5

With their season on the line, the 76ers showed up with more much energy and effort in Game 5. They've been especially solid on offense after a slow Joel Embiid kicked into gear following a slow start. And they only trail 57-50 at halftime.

Embiid has 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting and Maxey has 13 on 5-for-10 despite both struggling from three. They're shooting a combined 1-for-10 from deep.

If the Sixers could ever figure out the defensive side of the ball, they might have a chance steal another game in Boston and extend the series. But they have been disjoined on defense to say the least.

Grimes making an impact; Barlow gets minutes

Quentin Grimes' first-half stint may have been his best of the series, with a four-point play and another bucket to give him six points in 10 minutes. The Sixers could use an X factor performance off the bench, much like the Celtics got from Payton Pritchard in Game 4.

Nick Nurse said Sunday that the coaching staff would consider personnel adjustments that could give the Sixers a jolt, but have stuck with an eight-man rotation. Dominick Barlow got four second-quarter minutes alongside Joel Embiid, but otherwise it has been the usual suspects. Adem Bona has not been part of the rotation, after starting this series' first three games before Embiid returned.

Joel Embiid starting to settle in

Joel Embiid is starting to settle in after a rough start to Game 5.

Embiid's first shot off the game was a deep shot that didn't catch much of the rim. And after that miss, he seemed intent to prove to the Celtics that he could shoot from outside.

In the first quarter he three point-blank three-pointers from the top of the key and added another to start the second. But he's started to mix things up.

Quentin Grimes completes four-point play

With the Sixers down nine with just under seven minutes remaining, Quentin Grimes completed a four-point play to nearly cut Boston's lead in half.

The broadcast went to commercial after the basket, but when the game resumed, Grimes hit the free throw to complete the four-point play and cut the Celtics lead to seven midway through the second quarter.

Maxey, George lead way in first quarter; Embiid frustrated

The 76ers trailed 23-21 at the end of the first quarter of Game 5 in Boston.

The Sixers were much more competitive and the offense looked more like it did prior to Joel Embiid's return, with Tyrese Maxey and Paul George leading the way in the box score. Maxey had eight points and George had six. VJ Edgecombe also knocked down an open three-pointer, which is a good sign after he went 0-of-7 shooting from three in Game 4.

Joel Embiid, who put up good numbers in his return — 26 points and 10 rebounds — looked a little frustrated to start this one. After scoring eight straight to start Game 4, he only had two through the first frame tonight.

Nick Nurse makes early defensive adjustment

Nick Nurse has already made one adjustment. The Celtics started the game attacking Tyrese Maxey in the screen-and-roll with Derrick White on back-to-back possessions and he made it deep in the lane on both occasions, including a 15-foot floater.

He was promptly switched on to Sam Hauser, who is much more of a stand-still shooter and much less likely to pressure defenders off the drive.

The Sixers will need to make little chess moves like that throughout the game to stay competitive with a Celtics team with Finals aspirations.

Sixers need to find better balance on offense

Now that Joel Embiid is officially playing in Game 5, the focal point will become whether the 76ers can find a better blend on offense and more consistent effort on defense.

That obviously did not happen on Sunday, when Embiid's presence shifted everything the Sixers had done in the first three games, two of which were competitive and one of which the Sixers pulled out an improbable win.

Tyrese Maxey admitted that he needs to be more aggressive and that it is "unacceptable" for him to take only three shots in the first half of a game as he did in Game 4. VJ Edgecombe remains mired in a slump with the exception of his 30-point, 10-rebound outburst in Game 2.

Report: NBA shares new anti-tanking policy

According to ESPN, the NBA has shared with teams its new plan to reduce tanking among, a reform known as the "3-2-1 lottery."

Under the plan, the NBA's draft lottery would expand from 14 to 16 teams, flatten the odds, and include a relegation zone that would penalize the bottom three teams in the standings.

Teams that do not make the playoffs or play-in and avoid the relegation zone will receive three lottery balls each. Teams in the relegation zone will receive two lottery balls, as will the ninth and 10th seeds in each conference. The losers of 7-8 play-in game will receiver one ball each.

Embiid needs to take a backseat to Maxey and Edgecombe

Joel Embiid didn’t lose Game 4 for the 76ers.

He didn’t win it for them, either.

Somewhere in between is a conundrum that will define the upcoming Sixers summer and those in the foreseeable future.

With Embiid back, Adem Bona aiming to 'stay ready'

BOSTON – Now that Joel Embiid has returned from his appendectomy, what type of role does Adem Bona anticipate having in Tuesday’s crucial Game 5?

“Do my routine and stay ready,” Bona said before the Sixers’ shootaround at TD Garden. “Whenever my number is called, I’m going to go out there and do my job.”

Bona had started the series’ first three games in place of Embiid, but only played four minutes of Sunday’s Game 4 blowout loss when backup Andre Drummond temporarily left the game with an injury to his hip/quadriceps area. Bona went 2-of-2 from the floor for two points during that stint.

Embiid hits the court for shootaround, listed as probable

Howdy from what will be the last shootaround of the Sixers’ 2025-26 season if they don’t win Game 5 tonight. Joel Embiid was present, and Adem Bona (unsurprisingly) kept it vague when asked about his expected role tonight. “I just gotta stay ready.”

Joel Embiid is officially listed as probable to play in Game 5 tonight after returning from his appendectomy Sunday.

Kelly Oubre Jr., who played after being listed as questionable with adductor soreness for Game 4, is not on the report.

Embiid was on the court for Sixers' shootaround Tuesday morning.

The Sixers are on the brink

Tyrese Maxey offered the word “desperate” while describing how the 76ers must play Tuesday against the Boston Celtics with their season now on the brink of elimination.

The All-Star point guard also did not have an answer when asked why his team did not already possess that mentality in Sunday’s Game 4, when the Sixers trailed two games to one in the best-of-seven, first-round series and then got blasted by 32 points on their home floor.

“We should have been [desperate],” Maxey said. “We should have been.”

Sixers will need to overcome history to pull off upset

The stakes couldn't be higher for the 76ers tonight; their season will be over if they don't pull out a win against the Celtics in Boston.

A win tonight would force a Game 6 and bring the series back to Philadelphia. But the Sixers still have history to contend with.

The Boston Celtics are a prefect 32-0 when leading a playoff series 3-1, NBC's Mike Tirico noted in Sunday's broadcast.
