U.S. Open: Rory McIlroy enters final round as slight favorite to capture first major since 2014

Here's a look at the updated U.S. Open odds board entering Sunday's final round at The Los Angeles Country Club.

A missed short putt on the 18th hole Saturday night is all that separated Rickie Fowler from the solo 54-hole lead at the 2023 U.S. Open at The Los Angeles Country Club.

That, combined with Wyndham Clark’s approach shot — which featured a confident club twirl — and birdie has Fowler and Clark knotted at -10 entering Sunday’s final round.

The final group, which will tee off at 5:30 p.m. ET, is one shot clear of Rory McIlroy and three shots clear of Scottie Scheffler.

Those four players are the only players with a real chance at winning, at least according to the odds board. Here’s a look at the updated U.S. Open odds entering the final round Sunday.

Odds are courtesy of BetMGM, current at the time of publishing and subject to change.

U.S. Open odds entering final round (BetMGM)

  1. Rory McIlroy +200

  2. Rickie Fowler +250

  3. Wyndham Clark +275

  4. Scottie Scheffler +450

There’s a big drop off after those four players.

Xander Schauffele is next on the odds board at +3300. Schauffele enters the final round five off of the lead along with Dustin Johnson (+3500). Harris English is four back at -6, but he’s at +4000 (40/1) to win the tournament.

McIlroy is the consensus favorite at multiple sportsbooks. McIlroy, who sort of became the face of the PGA Tour after the controversial LIV Golf league sprung up, has not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship.

Fowler, meanwhile, has never won a major and hasn’t won on Tour since 2019. After struggling for the last few seasons, Fowler is having an excellent 2023. He has 12 top 25 finishes — and six top 10s — in 17 PGA Tour events played.

Clark, 25, earned his first PGA Tour win earlier this season at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Scheffler, of course, is the ranked the world’s No. 1 player and seems to be at or near the top of the leaderboard in every big tournament.
