Dog rescued from elevated train platform in Philadelphia

A young dog is safe after a rescue from an elevated train platform in Philadelphia.
ACCT Philly, the city’s open-intake shelter, received a call Sunday about a dog stranded high above the ground on a SEPTA train platform. The dog, later named Dottie, was huddled in a corner on a ledge with no enclosure, facing a "several-story drop" of nearly 40 feet.
“It really is a miracle that she didn’t just go off the platform,” said Sarah Barnett, Executive Director of ACCT Philly.
Officials believe Dottie jumped onto the tracks at a previous stop and ran down the line before becoming spooked by an oncoming train.
Trapped and trembling, she was eventually reached through a rescue effort involving SEPTA and local police, who provided a cherry picker to lift an ACCT Philly officer to her level.
Despite fears that she might leap, Dottie allowed the officer to leash her and was pulled to safety.
Dottie is now with Street Tails, a rescue in Philadelphia, where she will be up for adoption.
While Dottie’s dramatic rescue might spark interest in her adoption, Barnett is using the moment to highlight the thousands of other animals in need. “Everybody wants to adopt this dog because she has this amazing story,” Barnett said. “But there are thousands of dogs just like her. You can make sure their story has a happy ending by adopting.”
