Philly-area food banks respond to impending SNAP funding lapse

The money that half a million Philadelphians use to buy milk, eggs, bread and other groceries each month will be frozen on Nov. 1 if the federal government shutdown continues — ramping up pressure on local food banks and mutual aid groups to prevent hunger across the region.
Already in Pennsylvania, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, has stopped issuing benefits to newly accepted applicants because of the lack of federal funding.
Now, those groups are gearing up for what they believe will be a crushing surge in need.
