Jalen Hurts will not play against the Carolina Panthers this week due to a superficial blood clot in his calf, the Eagles announced on Thursday.

In a statement, the team said that Hurts visited the training room after practice last Thursday, Oct. 8, stating that he had taken a cleat to the calf during the Eagles’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams the Sunday prior. He underwent treatment, but still practiced in full on Friday and was added to the injury report.

The team said it learned of Hurts’ blood clot through an ultrasound performed on Saturday following their flight to London and their walk-through. Their medical staff determined that Hurts could safely play in their Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars — the staff concluded “activity and mobility were important” — but they recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game.

After playing on Sunday, undergoing more treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practicing in full on Wednesday, the team said Hurts had his follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night. Because there was “movement in the small blood clot,” the team ruled Hurts out for Sunday’s game.

The team said it is in the process of determining the appropriate course of treatment.

“His health and safety are our highest priority,” the team said in the statement.

Hurts was asked Wednesday after practice about the nature of his calf injury.

“It was a very unique experience to say the least,” he said. “I don’t want to get into the details of leading up to the game and whatnot. I got nicked up in the Rams game.”

Hurts did not emerge from the tunnel to come onto the field Sunday in London until the moments before the coin toss.

“I was trying to rest,” he said with a laugh.

With Hurts out against the Panthers, Tanner McKee is poised to start in his place. Rookie Cole Payton is the only other quarterback besides McKee and Hurts on the roster.

The Eagles could bring back Andy Dalton, who was released last week. They have open spots on the practice squad.
