Brad Allen announced as the referee for Eagles-Packers

The referee assignments for the Wild Card round are out and it looks like Brad Allen will lead the crew when the Eagles host the Packers on Sunday.

If Allen's name sounds familiar, that is because he was at the center of a controversial finish between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys at the end of the 2023 season.

After the Lions scored a touchdown with mere seconds to go to bring them within a point of Dallas, the Lions opted to go for the win and attempt a two-point conversion. The try was successful after a pass from Jared Goff to tackle Taylor Decker.

Four Packers players Eagles fans should know

Quarterback Jordan Love

Jordan Love is the determining factor behind Green Bay’s success. The 26-year-old is already one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league — putting together another successful season for a second consecutive year with the Packers.

Love threw for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions after signing a big extension in the offseason. Against the Eagles, he threw for 260 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception before suffering a knee sprain that kept him out two games. Love left Sunday’s game with an elbow injury but is expected to play.

Giants owner John Mara called Saquon Barkley, joked about sleep commercial

John Mara was very upset about Saquon Barkley’s Unisom commercial – but not for the reasons you’d think. The Giants owner wanted to co-star with Barkley in the ad.

“I spoke with him about it before the game,” Mara said. “I told him I was very upset with him, based on our relationship of so many years. He said, ‘What do you mean?’ and I said, ’The least you could have done was ask me to be in the commercial with you. I could’ve been tossing and turning and it would have been a great thing. There is an acting gene in our family, it’s not just my nieces.”

In the ad, Barkley says “I heard some of you were having trouble sleeping, so I wrote you a lullaby,” referencing Mara’s quote from Hard Knocks that he’d have trouble sleeping if Barkley left the Giants for the Eagles.

The Eagles have a tough road to the Super Bowl

How you feel about the Eagles’ chances this postseason should depend a lot about how you feel about Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, especially when compared to the gauntlet of coach-quarterback tandems they could face in the three playoff games they’ll need to win in order to advance to the Super Bowl.

In Round 1, it will be the Packers’ Matt LaFleur and — health willing — Jordan Love, a tandem that came pretty darn close to beating the Eagles in Week 1. After that will come one of the following four in the divisional round:

  1. Kevin O’Connell and Sam Darnold (Vikings)

  2. Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers)

  3. Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford (Rams)

  4. Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels (Commanders)

The Eagles are staring at a much different path than they did in either 2017 or 2022. They must win three games instead of two. If chalk prevails, they will have to win an NFC championship game on the road. And they will likely face a stiffer test in all three rounds than they have since squeaking out a win over the Matt Ryan-led Falcons in the divisional round of the 2017 playoffs.

Giants keeping Brian Daboll as head coach

Despite their 3-14 finish, the New York Giants are bringing back head coach Brian Daboll for another season, President John Mara announced Monday morning.

"We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire," Mara said in a statement.

The Giants are just 18-32 in three years under Daboll. Among other failures, the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator was unable to develop quarterback Daniel Jones, who the team cut during the season.

Black Monday: Doug Pederson among coaches fired

Former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday after his team finished a disappointing 4-13 this season.

Pederson is 22-29 in three seasons with the Jaguars, but this was their first season with a losing record during his tenure.

"I have an obligation first and foremost to serve the best interests of our team and especially our fans," Jaguars owner Shad Khan wrote in a statement Monday.

Despite injury, Jordan Love expected to start against the Eagles

Despite being knocked out of Sunday's game, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is expected to start against the Eagles Sunday in their wild card matchup.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur told reporters Love could have re-entered the game if it mattered after injuring his right elbow. LaFleur is confident Love will be on the field.

“He’s going to be good,” LaFleur told reporters.

Eagles injury report

The Eagles will be fairy healthy heading into the playoffs after resting their starters against the New York Giants Sunday.

Here is the latest Eagles injury report:

  1. Quarterback Jalen Hurts (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol. His status for Sunday's wild-card game against the Packers is unclear.

  2. Tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) played Sunday after being activated from injured reserve last week.

  3. Kenny Pickett (ribs) didn't play Sunday after sitting out all week.

Wide receiver Britain Covey (neck) was put on injured reserve last week. He's expected to miss at least two playoff games, though could return to the team if they make a deep postseason run.

Jake Elliott's struggles continue

Jake Elliott’s shaky season continued early in the season finale. On the Eagles’ second possession of the game — a 14-play, 60-yard drive — the group sputtered at the Giants’ 21-yard line and settled for a field-goal attempt. The 29-year-old kicker missed the 39-yard try wide left, keeping the Eagles up, 7-0.

The miss marked Elliott’s eighth overall this season and his first between 30 and 40 yards. Eight field-goal misses total is a career worst for Elliott, who hadn’t missed more than five in a single season until this year. The majority of Elliott’s unsuccessful field-goal attempts have come from beyond 50 yards this year (one made and six missed).

Although Elliott missed his first kick of the day, he rebounded as the game continued, making a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter, a 32-yarder in the fourth, and nailing all three of his extra-point attempts.
