Older wine drinkers still dominate the market for fine wines over $20, a group that overwhelmingly prefers wine in bottles with corks. But younger adults are now driving the trends among value-priced wines, a cohort that is more interested in eco-friendly packaging and less wedded to traditional bottles. As a result, the options in the box wine aisle are growing more diverse. Many alternatives to bottles and corks can be found these days, but the clear winner for value-seekers is the 3-liter box. These contain the equivalent of four standard bottles of wine and their bag and tap system that can keep it tasting fresh for up to four weeks after opening. On top of the usual economies of scale, the same volume of wine in a box weighs less and occupies less space than it does in bottles, which lowers shipping and storage costs by roughly 35% and shrinks the carbon footprint. Most wines in this category are made in California, as with this new series of varietals from industry leader Bota Box.

The Nighthawk line is in the same price range as standard Bota Box offerings, but features bolder flavors for more adventurous wine drinkers. This sauvignon blanc, for example, tastes more vividly of tart limes and leafy green herbs than their softer, more melony original offering. Lightweight and snappy, it makes an ideal choice for fans of the racy New Zealand approach to this grape. It’s perfect for salads, spicy foods and everyday occasions – no corkscrew required.
