Beach vacation for staff as Laurel restaurant closes for renovation

Many restaurants close for a summer vacation, sending management and staff off on a breather.
The dozen staffers at Laurel, the snug salon on East Passyunk Avenue, are getting a perk while the restaurant closes from Aug. 24 through Sept. 3 for vacation and a renovation.
Chef-owner Nicholas Elmi has sprung for a Shore house rental in Ventnor, N.J., inviting cooks and servers (and a significant other) for the duration. He’s cooking dinner at least one night, too.
Meanwhile, Laurel will undergo a face lift during the break, getting new paint, lighting, chairs, and new kitchen equipment — a $50,000 investment for the 22-seater. “It’s been six years and it’s time,” Elmi said.
Laurel will reopen Sept. 4.
In the Valley, Elmi’s bar next door, will remain open.
