Cooper University Health Care plans a $300 million outpatient facility in Gloucester Township
The Gloucester Township center follows the opening of a slightly smaller multispecialty facility in a former Sears in Moorestown as part of Cooper’s efforts to expand from Camden into the suburbs.
Cooper University Health Care plans to build a $300 million outpatient facility in Gloucester Township and expects to start seeing its first patients in specialties like cardiology, neurology, and oncology in 2029, the nonprofit said Wednesday.
The 184,000-square-foot, five-story Camden County center is slated for an undeveloped 39-acre property next to Route 42 near Gloucester Premium Outlets. It is expected to employ 400, Cooper said, with construction to begin a year from now.
The project continues the Camden-based organization’s push into suburban South Jersey, putting it into closer competition with Virtua Health, Jefferson Health New Jersey, and Inspira Health Network.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill joined local elected officials and Cooper officials to announce the project on Wednesday under a big tent at the Gloucester Premium Outlets parking lot in the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township.
Sherrill spoke about how difficult it was for her family to navigate various doctor appointments for two of her kids. “Bringing healthcare to patients, not bringing patients to healthcare, is such an innovative and thoughtful way to provide care in New Jersey,” she said.
Anthony Mazzarelli, co-president and CEO of Cooper University Health Care, thanked Sherrill and local elected officials for their support, saying Cooper was embarking on “another major project to expand access to advanced healthcare in a lower cost setting with the people of Southern New Jersey.”
The Gloucester Township facility will be larger than the 166,000-square-foot, three-story facility Cooper opened in a former Sears at Moorestown Mall in late 2023. The cost of that facility was $150 million.
In another expansion, Cooper acquired the former Cape Regional Health Health System near the Jersey shore in 2024.
Cooper’s latest audited financial results show that it had a strong operating profit of $144 million on $2.9 billion in revenue last year.
