Pew Charitable Trusts announced $2.5 million in grants for life sciences workforce development and neighborhood improvement
The grants are going to The Skills Initiative, a job-training nonprofit, and North10 Philadelphia, a community-development group.
Pew Charitable Trusts has awarded $2.5 million in grants to develop the workforce in the life sciences in the Philadelphia region and make neighborhood improvements in North Philadelphia’s Hunting Park-East Tioga section, Pew said Thursday.
The Skills Initiative, a subsidiary of University City District founded in 2011, will use its $1.5 million grant over three years to help fund the creation of a regional workforce hub meant to streamline collaboration between 11 life sciences employers and seven training providers.
The second grant recipient is North10 Philadelphia, which will use its $1 million over four years to expand the Broad, Germantown, Erie Collaborative. The collaborative coordinates efforts of numerous community groups focused on boosting economic mobility and community well-being.
As Temple University expands its campus and Philadelphia School District brings a new educational model to two local schools, North10 will try to ensure that resident needs and preferences are considered, Pew said.
The grants are part of Pew’s broad effort to increase economic mobility in the Philadelphia region, which ranks last by that measure among the 50 biggest metropolitan areas in the United States, according to Pew.
