Duff Goldman gets a 'Sugar High' here

The "Ace of Cakes" guy is hosting a new dessert-theme show.

Duff Goldman, the "Ace of Cakes" guy from Food Network, roared into the city on his Harley to shoot segments for Sugar High, his new series premiering Aug. 8 (or "ate-ate") at 10:30 p.m.

He spent hours on Tuesday, June 7 at the new Brown Betty Dessert Boutique flagship store at Second and Brown Streets in Northern Liberties as he learned how to make rice pudding from owners Norrinda Brown Hayat and her mother, Linda Hinton.

Goldman told me that the series, for which he visited six cities (Philly was last), grew out of his desire to expand in the dessert world beyond cakes. "These are stories about people," he told me. "It's a very human show. I'm also trying to teach people, so [during the cooking segments], I'm asking questions, playing the part of the audience. It's not just another travel show."

Brown Hayat, a D.C.-based civil rights lawyer, says her shop sells as much rice pudding as it can make. It's simple, and contains rice, cream, brown sugar, butter, eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lemon zest, though it cooks for an hour.

Goldman also visited Rim Cafe (to sample the Volcano) and the Sugar Philly truck (for macaroons).

Dates for these episodes have not been set.
