Harp & Crown: Schulson plans casual restaurant in Rittenhouse

Michael Schulson has the 1500 block of Sansom Street in mind for Harp & Crown, a casual American restaurant.

As he expands his empire on 13th Street, restaurateur Michael Schulson is fixing to open a bar-restaurant in Rittenhouse.

Schulson is bringing his plans for Harp & Crown before the Center City Residents' Association on the evening of April 28. The location is the 1500 block of Sansom Street - north side, midblock - across from Oscar's Tavern and Ladder 15 - part of the building that initially was to include a branch of the national music/bar chain Tin Roof.

Liberty Travel newly occupies the north half of the building, which fronts at 1524 Chestnut St.

At Harp & Crown - which could open very late this year - Schulson plans what he calls a fun and casual American sit-down restaurant with a comfort-food menu that will include barbecue (much as his Independence Beer Garden does). There will be no live music, he said. A mezzanine overlooking the dining room would be constructed, and there would be private dining in the basement.

Bar list will include American beers and high-end cocktails.

Harp & Crown was the name of a tavern around Third and Arch Streets before the Revolutionary War.

Schulson also is overseeing build-out of Double Knot, a coffee house/Japanese restaurant, next to his Sampan on 13th Street south of Sansom. He also owns Izakaya at the Borgata in Atlantic City.
