Korean bar SouthGate hires Vernick sous chef

David Feola will start before New Year's as executive chef.

SouthGate, the gastropub at 18th and Lombard Streets, has hired David Feola, who's been Greg Vernick's sous chef at the nearby Vernick since Day One.

Feola, who started working with Vernick at Toqueville in New York City, starts right before New Year's.

SouthGate owner Peter Hwang said that the menu would change gradually but would remain Korean-inspired. He also emphasized that the bibimbap, Korean fried chicken, and his grandmother's kimchi "are never going away."

SouthGate's original chef, Clara Park, recently bowed out.

Vernick, who said Feola was "leaving with high honors," said he would announce his replacement soon.
